History of the Nissan 240sx (1989-1997)

1989

The Nissan 240sx was introduced in North America in 1989 as the successor to the 200SX. Built on the S13 platform, it featured a 2.4L KA24E engine producing 140 horsepower. The 240sx was known for its rear-wheel-drive layout, perfect weight distribution, and independent suspension, making it popular among car enthusiasts. The hatchback and coupe models became icons in the drifting scene, with the car’s handling and modifiability highly praised.

1990

The 1990 model year saw few changes, but the 240sx continued to grow in popularity. The hatchback and coupe models were offered with different trim levels, including the SE and LE, with options such as power windows, sunroof, and an upgraded sound system.

1991

In 1991, Nissan introduced a significant change by upgrading the engine to the KA24DE, a dual overhead camshaft version of the original engine. This new engine produced 155 horsepower, improving both performance and reliability. The 240sx also received slight cosmetic updates, including new tail lights and other minor exterior refinements.

1992

1992 brought minimal changes to the 240sx. Nissan focused on refining the car’s existing design, keeping the coupe and hatchback body styles. The 240sx’s affordability and performance continued to attract a loyal fan base.

1993

In 1993, Nissan introduced a convertible version of the 240sx, adding a stylish option to the lineup. The convertible came equipped with the KA24DE engine and featured power-operated soft-top roofs. Though heavier than its coupe and hatchback counterparts, the convertible gained attention for its unique design and appeal.

1994

By 1994, the 240sx was starting to age, but it remained a popular choice for tuners and performance enthusiasts. Nissan made only minor updates, keeping the convertible in the lineup and ensuring the car’s reputation as a fun, modifiable vehicle stayed intact.

1995

1995 marked the introduction of the second generation of the 240sx, built on the S14 platform. The new design featured a sleeker, more aerodynamic body and a refined interior. The KA24DE engine carried over from the S13, but the car’s handling and suspension were further improved. Enthusiasts appreciated the new styling, though some missed the distinctiveness of the earlier S13 design.

1996

In 1996, the 240sx saw few changes from the previous year. The S14 continued to perform well, with solid reviews for its handling, balance, and potential for upgrades. Nissan focused on maintaining the car’s appeal to its niche market.

1997

The final year of the 240sx in the U.S. was 1997. With Nissan’s focus shifting to other models, the S14 chassis was retired from the North American market. Though the 240sx’s production ceased, its legacy lived on in the tuner and drifting communities, where the car became an icon for rear-wheel-drive performance and modification potential.
